How to See Opportunities in Challenges
In every aspect of life, whether it is on a personal scale or globally, we experience challenges. There are challenges that test our emotional state and those that force us to question our physical strength. We are often left wondering if we are strong enough or if someone else may have been able to master it in a way we never could have managed.
The truth is that we all face challenges. The difference between a problem and an opportunity is what we do with it. What determines our strength is how we deal with those challenges. Do we sit back and allow the challenges to conquer us or do we step back, change our mindset and attack it head on? In the words of contemporary Japanese Writer, Haruki Murakami, “Once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through or how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in”.
The key to overcoming any obstacle or challenge is to find the opportunity inside it. Consider this question: how much different would a problem be if you shifted your mindset? Oftentimes, the difference between success and failure is a simple change of attitude. Your immediate response to any given challenge begins a chain reaction that will determine the outcome.
Imagine, if you will, baking a cake. Mixing haphazard ingredients in a bowl will not get you that perfectly formed chocolate cake. Rather, it takes a recipe, a certain measure of ingredients, mixed together and baked it in a hot oven. An imbalance of any of these is the difference between fresh baked goodness and a soggy mess. Similarly, one less second of worry and one more second of optimism can move your heart space from victim to victor.
